STEM I
- The challenge I set myself was to do a simple etching from concept to finish in one day.- Yes, it was a long day, but I managed to do it. (Some of my etching have taken weeks and months!)- My plan was - 1 application of ground, minimalistic clean lines & dots, 1 etch, 1 test print- And then do an edition of 10!

—————
I know its is sometimes out of reach to own a piece of original art. Which is why it was important to me to create something a little more affordable. It might be a mini print, but it is hand printed!

HANDMADE WITH LOVE
This piece is printed using a copper etching plate.
Intaglio etching is a labour intensive printmaking technique that involves incising the lines & dots onto a copper plate, with a sharp point. It is then etched in Ferric Chloride, which bites the design into the copper plate.
The plate is then inked with etching ink. The ink sits in the grooves, whilst the surface ink is wiped off. The ink is then drawn from the incised lines, onto dampened paper, using an etching press.
Each print takes a long time to produce.
These highly detailed, intricate plates ensure each print is unique, making every piece a true one-of-a-kind etching.
I print in small editions, keeping the work precious and limited. Please Note - Each print may vary slightly, as they are individually printed by hand.

THE SKETCH & THE PLATE

The DESIGN is traced onto a prepared copper plate, with wax paper. It is then drawn through an acid resistant ground (Blue), with a range of etching needles (with the help of a magnifier) The exposed copper lines & dots are then ETCHED, by placing the plate into ferric chloride for a period of time. Once the line is etched to the correct depth, the line is covered up, with varnish. This plate went through this process twice, to get a mix of fine & heavy lines. In total it was etched for around an hour

THE PRINT
At each stage, a TEST PRINT is made, to check the progress of the printing plate. Once satisfied, an EDITION is printed.

The plate is only 10 x 4.5 cm , which you think wouldn't take too long to PRINT but in reality it does take a while! Most of the time is taken , wiping the ink off the plate, so that it has a clean background and edge. I do this first with newsprint, then tissue, then finally I wipe with my skin (and French chalk)

Then inked plate & damp paper is then run through my ETCHING PRESS. The high press pressure will draw out the ink from the lines on the plate. The print is then dried over a number of days/weeks.
This print in an EDITION OF 60.
