Drypoint | Aluminium | Plate | Drypoint is a printmaking process in which a design is drawn on a plate with a sharp, pointed needle-like instrument | Here's a small drypoint (aluminium) plate (12.5 x 10 cm) Featuring a cicada with lotus blossoms & ginkgo leaves. I have used a combination of tools including drypoint needles & a tattoo machine with a single needle. Tools Finished Plate The Burr I am still testing out different ways of inking & wiping drypoint plates The lines on drypoint plates are softer. The lines created are slightly raised & can have a ragged or rough appearance at the edges. This is known as the burr. The ink then adheres to both the incised line and the burr. This gives the printed line a distinctive velvety soft look. There are no clean or perfect lines or edges on a drypoint. This has taken me a little while to get used to , as my line art is generally so precise but I now love the soft inconsistency. Inking >>>>> Burr Printing There are so many variables which come into the printing a plate. I used to find it frustrating… but have now settled into it being 'part of the process'. So often I either under wipe (remove too much ink) or over wipe (don’t remove enough ink) I am still experimenting & learning , using different papers, inks & techniques More often than not I don't get a print I like! Imperfections; I think it is important to show that not everything works first time. I am hoping it gets more predictable with practise! Quite often it is the print that I don't spend too much thought or time on , that comes out the best! All my work is packed with symbolism, whether it be hidden or in a more obvious form. Here is one that you will find in my art. | GINKGO | • Ginkgo trees have an incredibly long lifespan, attributed in part due to their remarkable resistance to disease and pests. Some specimens are reportedly more than 3,000 years old. Ginkgo is the oldest surviving species of tree known to exist. • In Japanese decorative art, the ginkgo's symbolise beauty: It also represents profound endurance (four Ginkgo’s survived the blast at Hiroshima and are still growing today) • It has become a symbol of strength, hope and peace for many. • The tree appears throughout Chinese culture and is associated with an optimistic view of the future. Dodecahedron Beetle | Copper | Etching With Burnished Aquatint | Intaglio describes any printmaking technique in which the image is produced by incising into the printing plate – the incised line or area holds the ink and creates the image | || Adventures In Printmaking || I am currently started to produce etchings. This is a little plate, from the geometric beetle series. It is only 10 x 7 cm, so there is a lot of detail on this little plate. It features a beetle within a dodecahedron. It combines geometry & nature. Full Process Video || From Drawing to Print || Process; 1. Digital Design 2. File & prepare the plate. 3. Draw onto plate 4. Etch the lines in stages (timing each weight of line) 5. Add more drawing details 6. Etch the details in stages (covering up the areas you don’t want etched ) 7. Add the aquatint 8. Etch the aquatint in stages (covering up the areas you don’t want etched ) 9. Clean the plate 10. Burnish the aquatint (to add highlights & lift the tone) 11. Prepare the ink, paper & etching press 12. Print! • Created @spikeprintstudio Tracing > Drawing > Aquatint Cleaning > Result The plate printed a little too dark, as the aquatint came out very heavy. So, I decided to burnish the design. I used tools to reduce the tooth on the aquatint. This then created a range of lighter tones. To do this, I used sandpaper & jewellers rouge across the whole design. I then shaved selected areas with a scraper. Finishing by polishing it with burnishers. Flash Tattoo Design | New Art | Coal Tit | Ginkgo The Periparus Ater is a “Black-headed titmouse with white nape, ash-grey back, white breast. This small design features a stylised Coal Tit, sitting on a Ginkgo branch. The design can be tattooed with or without the dotted circle. Intaglio | Website | Update | Intaglio describes any printmaking technique in which the image is produced by incising into the printing plate – the incised line or area holds the ink and creates the image | I have just added an ‘ Intaglio’ section to the website. It is something I have been putting off, as I really don't enjoy that part of the ‘job’ . (That is an understatement!) But I felt the time was right to begin to add the Intaglio part of Punctured Artefact onto the website! Custom Tattoo Design | Height 25 cm | 2022 Final Design This design holds personal symbolism, to the wearer. The main motif is a humpback whale in flowing icy water. In the distance you can see another whale, its tail holding up a sun & ice symbol. It is a symbolic shape inspired by the sound of the sun. Style : The design features lots of geometric or stylised shapes & motifs, alongside some more organic or natural marks. This combination of nature & geometry is a key focus of the Punctured Artefact Style. | Symbolism | Sound of the Sun | The sun vibrates at a frequency of 126,22hz. NASA Scientists played the frequency of 126,22hz to a sample of water & then froze it. The 6 Point Star Pattern I created was based on an image of the frozen water sample | Design Evolution This design was a collaborative design.
